Pandemic TD Battles
OVERVIEW
Preface to the Game!
Overview: Text
Tower Defence (TD) games are a genre of strategy games focusing on tower placement and learning how to effectively manage resources. In its simplest form, a TD game consists of a player buying and placing defensive towers (turrets) that fire upon different types of incoming enemies. For each enemy destroyed by the turrets, the player earns money corresponding to the difficulty of the enemy. The player wins the level if a certain number of enemies are destroyed. If, however, enough enemies (more than the allowed number) reach the end of the map, the enemies win, making the player lose. The turret implementation usually involves selecting, buying, placing, upgrading, and possibly selling turrets that fire automatically on the forces. TD games have proved to be challenging yet fun and addictive. The simplicity of gameplay and the tactics combined with the wide variety of games available in this genre have created a large population of casual TD gamers.
Having played such games for quite some time, soon my friends and I got into a debate. The simple question we had was: Do TD Games belong to the “strategic games” category, or the “casual games” category? After hours of just questioning and thinking with my friends over this very matter, I realised that if I wanted to effectively understand the very basis of these games, I would have to make a tower defence video game myself. This is where my learning as the creator of a video game began.
